If you are between the ages of 17 and 25, then you may be looking into getting your wisdom teeth removed. These teeth come in during your young adult years, but unfortunately they don’t often fit in your mouth. Because of this, wisdom teeth can damage adjacent teeth, develop decay, or even grow cysts and tumors. In order to protect dental health, wisdom teeth are usually removed through the following procedure:

• Before wisdom teeth removal, your surgeon will set up a consultation with you so they can examine your teeth and x-rays of them.
• For the surgery, your surgeon will inject a local anesthetic in your mouth. Depending on how complex the removal will be, they may also use sedation or general anesthesia.
• An incision is made to the gum tissue.
• Sometimes the bone surrounding the wisdom teeth roots is removed.
• The wisdom teeth are divided into sections. Doing so makes it easier to take them from their socket.
• After the teeth are removed, the extraction site is cleaned of any excess bone and tooth debris.
• The tissue of the extraction site is closed through suturing.
• A gauze pad is placed over the area to prevent excess bleeding and to aid clotting.
