Bone Graft Surgery to Restore Jawbone Structure

Posted .

A loss of bone material in your jaw can make it hard for you to properly secure your dentures or receive a dental implant. Severe tooth decay, multiple tooth extractions and advanced gum disease can all lead to a reduction in bone structure. In a situation like this your dentist might recommend a bone graft procedure to restore structure and function in your mouth.

They will need to take a series of X-rays or perform a CT scan to assess the available bone structure and other factors like the location of your sinuses. This is also a good time to let them know about any relevant medical conditions or medications you are taking.

The procedure for a bone graft can be done on an outpatient basis. The oral surgeon or periodontist usually recommends that you be deeply sedated for your own comfort. You will need to arrange for a friend or family member to drive you and help you at home until you are back on your feet.

The bone graft sample can be taken from your chin or if you prefer it can be sourced from a surgical grade cadaver. The bone graft is then implanted into the relevant areas in your jaw and the gums are closed. Your recovery time will vary depending on your age, overall health and quality aftercare. If you use tobacco it will irritate the gum tissues, which increases recovery time and risk of infection.
